Cycling !
Took a different route today and only went 8.2 miles, still, it's enough for now!!

I took a photo of me an the bike, as Greyscar requested,
Here...

Here is something I passed on my way back too, I could smell them as I went through them, and I can only describe it as . . Garlicy onion smell :p
I assume they are wild onins of some sort, and there is a great expanse of it!
MmmmmM!!

If I find out the Onions are edible, I might pinch a few!
And i'd like to give my bike a name.. any ideas?

EDIT:
Apparently the plant is Wild Garlic!!

Trust me - I'm a Botanist.

The oniony niff comes from Allium ursinum also known as Wild Garlic or "Ramsons".

It's edible. Well, it's not killed *me* so far.

Re: Trust me - I'm a Botanist.

Ha, I had *just* found that out as you posted.. I was hoping it would be edible, and assumed you might know ;0)

What kind of culinary delights have you produced with them so far?

Re: Trust me - I'm a Botanist.

I've added a few of the leaves to stews & casseroles. The flavour is rather milder than 'commercial' Garlic - think of it as being more like that of chives.

There's a big patch of the stuff in some woods I drive through on my way to/from the orifice - some day I should stop off and expropriate some of the bulbs to see if it's possible to establish a local colony of the things. Though I fear my local soils are too shallow dry and chalk-rich for wild garlic to really thrive.

Re: Trust me - I'm a Botanist.

Hmmm, I may have to fill my backpack the next time I pass through then :)

Thanks for identifiying them!

Re: Trust me - I'm a Botanist.

I'm good at identifying plants - well, those that have definite culinary value! Hence Footpad's description of me as unchallenged choice for Person Most Likely To Survive The Zombie Apocalypse..

Is a helmet mendatory for bicyclists in the UK?
kajidog From: [info]kajidog Date: May 19th, 2009 11:40 pm (UTC) (Link)
No... but there was a recent court case that reduced a driver's sentence because the cyclist he hit wasn't wearing a helmet. Also, there have been attempts to make cyclists partly liable for head injuries if they weren't wearing one.

The cyclist advocacy organisation here argues that if helmets were made compulsory, the cost to society would be greater than the cost of a few head injuries (because fewer people would ride).

Hmm, i'm even more glad I wear one now!

In my silly youth, I used to think they were just nonsense, and you didn't need one.
I choose life anyday..

I have a story to do with wearing helmets.

When I lived up north and did mountain biking alot, I got a helmet. It was comfortable, but made you feel alittle hot. I wore it always though.

One day while cycling down this particularly steep hill, I felt really unsafe. I couldn't figure why I just couldn't get into the swing of belting down this hill at high speed like I normally did.

My friend then pointed out that I'd forgotten my helmet!

So, from a psycological point of view, they make you feel safer, but prehaps more likely to take risks too!

Aye, as Kaji says, it's not, but it increases our chances of winning a court case.

That and, I would definately choose looking daft in a helmet, over being killed! :0)

Looks good I would like a 700 wheel size bike myself. People alway blast past me on them and it always looks easy.

And the onion things are called ramsoms the bane of my life. yes you can eat them but for Christ sake do not plant them in your garden as they have a habit of spreading every bloody where and they are a pig to kill.

Heh, yeah, i heard they spread like fire, and there was shit loads in this place i passed through!
